Willow Canyon hosts Poetry Out Loud
Willow Canyon students compete in Poetry Out LoudWillow Canyon High School hosted the fifth annual Poetry Out Loud recitation competition on Thursday, January 31.  Speech and Debate co-captains Braydon Mathis and Lauren Tancil emceed the event that featured  more than 30 competitors.  Poetry Out Loud invites the dynamic aspects of slam poetry, spoken word, and theater into the English class. Through Poetry Out Loud, high school students can master public speaking skills, build self-confidence and learn about their literary heritage.

Zoey Plytas received first place with her performance of "Bleeding Heart" by Carmen Giménez Smith. Alexis Covarrubio placed second with her rendition of  "I Have a Time Machine" by Brenda Shaughnessy.  Amanda Haynes  performed "The Lamb" by Linda Gregg and won the third place honor.  

Zoey will move on to compete in the Central Regional Poetry Out Loud Competition on Saturday, February 9th, 2019  at  ASU West.

Poetry Out Loud encourages students to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation and is supported by the National Endowment for the Arts.
