Drive Wise Surprise - Back to School Tips
The start of another school year is right around the corner! YOUR Surprise Police Department would like to share some basic back-to-school safety tips for drivers and for students.

Next week, school will begin and school buses, young pedestrians and some young bicyclists will soon be making the early morning commute to school throughout Surprise. To ensure the children make it to their destination safely, please be on the lookout for the students.

For parents, or those students that are driving, please pay attention to all traffic signs as well as signs that prohibit or restrict parking. As a reminder, if a sign says that “stopping, standing, and parking” is prohibited, you cannot wait there.

Additionally, as parents, please talk to your children about some of the dangers of the roadway. Remind them to stop and look left, right and left again to see if cars are coming before they cross the street.

As the start of the school year is a busy time for everyone, we recommend you leave a little earlier than you may normally need to. The extra time you gain by leaving early can help to reduce the stress level.

Starting August 1st, 2019, officers from YOUR Surprise Police Department will be enhancing our enforcement efforts around local schools. The school zone enforcement will primarily be focused on the following issues:

• Speeding in school zones
• Speeding near crosswalks
• Passing in school zones
• Not stopping when people are in the crosswalks

Remember, we all share the streets, so please, Drive Wise, Surprise!
