Role of the School Nurse and Health Assistant

The Health Assistant and School Nurse collaborate with parents, guardians, primary care providers and school staff to provide confidential and prompt first aid.

Health Office staff responsibilities include:
  • First aid and episodic care for students and staff
  • Health screening for vision and hearing for students
  • Immunization surveillance
  • Medication administration
  • Maintenance of health records
  • Assistance with identification, education and nursing care management of students with health problems and special education needs
  • Health education for students, staff and parents/guardians
  • Promotion of safe, healthy and nurturing school environment
  • Serve as school liaison to home and community resources

The Nurse is a consultant for students, parents and educational staff. The Nurse is not a primary care provider and cannot make a medical diagnosis. Do not send ill students to school to be evaluated by the Health Assistant/Nurse.
