Jill Hoppe, PrincipalA Message from the Principal

February, 2020

Dear Cougar Families,

Teachers are approaching the new semester with purpose and engagement for our students. Throughout the year, as a staff, we have been focusing professional development on Academic Conversations and Depth of Knowledge.  Educational research supports the importance of purposeful talk embedded throughout lessons to help students develop deeper understanding of concepts. Additionally, our goal is moving lessons from recall and reproduction to strategic thinking and reasoning.

We continue to work toward achieving goals within our Continuous Improvement Plan. Teachers analyzed benchmark data to design personalized instruction to enrich and close learning gaps. We are using Restorative Practice to help students learn how to empathize with others and peacefully handle difficult situations. Lastly, we are building a culture of leadership by welcoming a variety of stakeholders on our many committees.  January was filled with unique learning opportunities and activities for our students. Our students attended field trips, listened to guest speakers, and engaged in project based learning.

Students are growing their social/emotional tool belt by studying the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People. Throughout the month of February, students will focus on Habit 6: Synergize. To put it simply, synergy means "two heads are better than one." Synergize is the habit of creative cooperation. We are asking students to value and appreciate the mental, emotional, and psychological differences among people.

As always, thank you all so much for your support and focus on excellence.

Have a YES! Kind of month,

Jill Hoppe,
Principal
