Active COVID-19 Cases

At the April 14 Governing Board meeting it was announced that Dysart will be suspending weekly postings of active case numbers on our website because the numbers have dropped drastically and remained extremely low. If you have  questions regarding cases at specific sites, please reach out to your school directly.

The Dysart Unified School District is providing information about currently active and confirmed COVID-19 cases to our families and staff.  An active case indicates that an individual that attends school or works on a campus/site has tested positive for COVID-19 and is in isolation, reported it to us, and we have reported it to the Maricopa County Department of Public Health. HIPAA, FERPA, and ADA regulations limit the details we can provide about individuals who have tested positive.

Active Cases Data Details:
Dysart’s Active Cases website is updated by the end of the day each Tuesday and Friday. The total number reflects all active AND confirmed COVID cases that are still in effect for the next school day for all students or staff. Online iSchool students are included in our total student/staff counts in an abundance of caution, since they could have been on campus for a variety of reasons such as on-campus assistance, assessments, or extracurricular activities. Additionally, staff members, including Growing Minds Preschool staff, that may work on multiple campuses are included in the “District Facilities” number so that they are not duplicated. The cases reflect what is active for the next school day so that parents have the most relevant information available.  As positive cases complete the 10-day isolation period, they are removed from the count, and cases that are in their last day of isolation on the date of the update are not included, since they would no longer be active the next school day. Quarantine numbers are not included since nearly all of those in quarantine have not tested positive or become symptomatic.

What is the protocol for a positive COVID case at a school site?
When a positive case is reported to the school the health office staff and administration begin the process of collecting information from the parent and student regarding symptom onset, testing dates, previous exposure, etc. Schools have been asked by Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) to verify all positive COVID test results. Per ADPH, if you are fully vaccinated, or if you already had COVID-19 and completed the isolation period, then come in contact with someone who is positive within three months from your testing date, additional quarantine is not required.  Staff will begin to collect direct contact information at the school site.  Direct contact is defined as being within 6 feet of a person with COVID-19 for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more over a 24-hour period OR had physical contact with a person.  Students who have direct contact will be quarantined for 10 days from the last date of contact with the positive person.  Anyone who tests positive is in isolation for 10 days and can return to school if they have been symptom free for 24 hours without fever or pain reducing medication, or if no one in their household is symptomatic or has tested positive during the 10-day isolation period. Every positive case is reported to the Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH).

Beginning March 22, 2021, we have adopted the new CDC-approved option that states parents may choose to shorten the length of the COVID-19 quarantine period for those with a direct contact, with proof of a negative PCR or ANTIGEN test result. Students may return to school on day 8 ONLY if a negative PCR or ANTIGEN test is taken on day 6 or 7 of the assigned quarantine. Parents are asked to provide the negative test results to the health office for review. Once approved, the student may return to school on day 8 instead of day 11. Please note this option applies only to those that have been in direct contact with someone who has tested positive.  Anyone who has tested positive must remain in isolation for the full 10 days, or until they are symptom free for 24 hrs.

Parents/guardians are notified about a COVID case if:

  • Your child has had direct contact (within 6 feet for a cumulative total of 15 minutes or more) with someone who tested positive and that person is in isolation.
  • Your child has had indirect contact with a student or staff member that tested positive, within 6 feet for less than 15 minutes, or if they were in direct contact with a student in the class who has a household member who tested positive.
  • There are 2 or more active cases on campus from different households simultaneously that meet specific criteria from the MCDPH (listed below).

When will school-wide notifications take place regarding COVID cases?
Dysart will send a school-wide notification only when two or more students or staff have tested positive for COVID-19 within a 14-day period, AND the following criteria from the Maricopa County Department of Public Health (MCDPH) are met:

1. Those that have tested positive could have had direct contact, such as in a classroom or on a school sports team; and
2. Do not live in the same household; and
3. Were not identified as direct contacts of each other in another setting during a Public Health case investigation (e.g. friends who play together in each other’s homes).

What is the difference between Active Cases and those in Quarantine?
When we are notified of a positive case our staff immediately begins contact tracing and identifies those who were in direct contact with that individual.  As a precaution we place those in direct contact in quarantine because they had direct contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. Over 99% of those in quarantine never test positive or become symptomatic.  The number of active cases reflects those who have tested positive and are in isolation.

Disclaimer: All active COVID-19 cases data listed is for informational purposes only and will be updated each Tuesday and Friday afternoon, to reflect the total for the next school/work day. Quarantine numbers are not included since nearly all of those in quarantine have NOT tested positive or become symptomatic. Information shared is based on what the district is aware of, and can be verified with MCDPH.  Dysart is not liable for lack of information we have received or been able to verify.
