Canyon Ridge Groups and Activities

Student Council

Advisor:  Carla Bennett
Purpose:  The purpose of Student Council is to ensure all student voices are being heard. Student Council members approve all school wide fundraisers, plan school dances,volunteer for community events and promote school spirit. Student Council members are focused on being school wide leaders who communicate events to their homeroom classes .
Open To:  Students in Grades 7 and 8 by Invitation
Meeting Information:  Every other Friday at 7:30 a.m.  First meeting to be held on Friday, August 10, 2018.
National Junior Honor Society (NJHS)

Advisor:  Chantall Vargas
Purpose:  The purpose of this chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to stimulate a desire to render service, to promote worthy leadership, to encourage the development of character, and to foster active citizenship in students of CRS
Open To:  7th and 8th Grade students by invitation 
​Meeting Information:   Meetings will be held on Tuesdays at 7:15 a.m., in Room 150 .  Meeting dates are:  8/7, 8/21, 9/4, 9/18, 10/23, 11/6, 11/20, 12/4, 1/8, 1/22, 2/5, 2/19, 3/5, 4/9, 4/23, 5/7 and 5/21.    Induction Ceremony for new members for the 19/20 school year will be held on May 14, 2019.   Current NJHS members will also be invited to attend.

National Elementary Honor Society (NEHS)

Advisor:  Jennifer Klein
Purpose:  The NEHS chapter at Canyon Ridge provides opportunities for students to become ambassadors for our school and take on community service projects. Our focus is on leadership, scholarship, responsibility, and service.
Open To:  4th, 5th and 6th Grade students by invitation/application
Meeting Information:  Monthly meetings on the first Thursday of every month beginning September 6, 2018.

FOR Club

Advisor:  Amy Benton
Purpose:  The purpose of Friends of Rachel Club is to allow students to help promote kindness and leadership to all students in the school and the community. Students take part in multiple community service projects throughout the school year. We have adopted the Ronald McDonald House Charities as our community service project for the year. FOR Club members take part in planning and implementing Red Ribbon Week, Pop Tab Wars/Supply Drive, Family Adoption for Christmas, Acts of Leadership Week, Schoolwide Penny Wars, and the big Rachel's Rally at the end of the year.

Library Crew/iExplore-Depco Technicians

Advisor:   Liana Gillespie
Purpose:   Students assist in upkeep of the library, cleaning iExplore and Depco Labs, and setting up for activities in iExplore. This is an open club. Students attend when they are able.  Attendance will only be taken for the purposes of the celebration invitations at the end of the year

Creative Artist Studio Time (ART CAST)

Advisor:  Kristie Crane
Purpose:  This will be a Student Leadership focused group.  Students will generate their own ideas while having access to supplies and teacher guidance.  There will be three sessions, Fall, Winter and Spring.
​Open To:  Students in Grades 5 through 8 (maximum number of students per session - 20) 
Meeting Information:   Every Wednesday from 3:00 to 4:00 p.m.

Fit for Kids

Advisor:  Colleen Whalen
Purpose:   Physical activity is critical to our children’s health and well-being. Studies show that physical activity not only helps kids stay active and healthy, but it can enhance important skills like concentration and problem solving, which can improve academic performance.
Open To:  Students in Grades 2 through 8
Meeting Information:   Weekly from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m. beginning on October 31, 2018.  Additional details will follow


Advisor:  Jay Laursen
Purpose:  Students will have access to Raspberry Pi computers, arduino control boards, 3-d printer, little bits, and other materials to design and innovate solutions to everyday problems.
​Open To:  Students in Grades 5 through 8
Meeting Information:   Weekly on Thursdays from 3:00 - 4:15 p.m. beginning on Thursday, August 30, 2018.


Advisor:  Lilly Islas
Purpose:  Students will use an online program to create the school yearbook. They will be responsible for taking pictures, designing and editing pages, setting appointments with staff, and working within a deadline. There will be opportunities for individual and collaborative work to complete their book. Students must be willing to commit to one day per week per quarter.

Meeting Information:  Yearbook Club will meet every Wednesday at 7:20 a.m., beginning Wednesday, September 5, 2018.

Cougar Choir

Advisor:  Amanda Mutai
Purpose:  Canyon Ridge Choral program is designed to create an opportunity for students to experience musical excellence in learning music and performing choral concerts. Students will also be encouraged to learn more about their own voice and to gain skills necessary to see musical and vocal growth. For the Canyon Ridge Cougar Choir specifically the purpose is to give students first hand experience at reading music, expressing music, and performing music as they grow as musicians.
Open To:  Students in Grades 3 through 5
Meeting Information:  Weekly on Wednesdays from 3:00 to 3:45 p.m., beginning Wednesday, August 22.

Canyon Singers

Advisor:  Amanda Mutai
Purpose:  Canyon Ridge Choral program is designed to create an opportunity for students to experience musical excellence in learning music and performing choral concerts. Students will also be encouraged to learn more about their own voice and to gain skills necessary to see musical and vocal growth. For the Canyon Ridge Canyon Singers specifically the purpose is to give students first hand experience at developing previously learned skills and adding depth of knowledge in both layering musical vocal parts, exploring new performance venues, and expanding musical repetoire.
Open To:  Students in Grades 6 through 8
Meeting Information:  Weekly on Thursdays from 3:00 to 3:45 p.m. , beginning on Thursday, August 23.

Depco Exploration

Advisor:  Liana Gillespie
Purpose:   Students will have use of the Depco Lab for extra time on modules started in electives or if students were not able to fit Depco Lab into their electives schedule. Students must have a permission slip on file with the coordinator and do not need to attend each week. 
Open To:  Students in Grades 5 through 8
Meeting Information:   Wednesdays from 3:00 - 4:30 p.m, beginning September 5, 2018 and ending April 25, 2019


Basic Sign Language Learners

Advisor:  Jennifer Kaderlik/Jillian Strong
Purpose:  This sign language group is for beginners/younger students. The purpose of this group is to learn the basics of a visual language, its rules, and some simple deaf culture aspects. The basic group will be open to all, with optional opportunities to practice/learn in the community (TBD).
Open To:  All Students in Grades 3 through 8
Meeting Information:  Weekly on Thursday from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m., beginning Thursday, September 6, 2018.  Permission forms will be in a folder in the front office for students to get and return completed in order to join.



Advisor:  Liana Gillespie
Purpose:  Students will build, code, and operate robots in collaborative competitions. There may be off-site competitions and events to attend on evenings and/or Saturdays. 
Majority of transportation will need to be provided by the students' parents or guardians and Activity Fee paid before attending Robotics.  Students must attend at least one meeting per week or be dropped unless prior notification has been made to the facilitator.
Open To:  Students in Grades 4-8 (number of students will be limited to 12) 
Meeting Information: Tuesdays 3:00 - 4:00 (Library); Wednesdays 3:00 - 4:30 (Depco Lab); Thursdays 3:00 - 4:00 (Library), starting August 29, 2018 and ending May 10, 2019


Advisor:  Justean Palmer
Purpose:  Canyon Ridge Mathlete Teams are a team where students love to do math problems and love to challenge their thinking with numbers. Teams are divided in to 1/2, 3/4, 5/6, and 7/8. The teams meet starting in March and train by doing problem solving problems in math. Competition will be at Kingswood in May.
Open To:  Students in Grades 1 through 8
Meeting Information:  Weekly beginning in March, 2019.   More information to follow

Spirit Club

Advisor:  Miranda Virgil
Purpose:  Spirit Club is a club that meets to plan ways to raise spirit by making posters for teams, attending some sporting events, and learning chants
Open To:  Students in Grades 6 through 8
Meeting Information:  Weekly from 3:00 - 4:00 p.m.  More information to follow


Advisor:  Eva Galindo
Purpose:  The purpose of SWAG is to ensure all 8th grade voices are being heard. SWAG will work throughout the year to plan 8th grade activities to promote school spirit. Students will act as leaders to plan these activities.
Open To:  Students in 8th Grade
Meeting Information:  Bi-weekly from 7:15 - 8:00 a.m., beginning Thursday, August 23, 2018.


Advisor:  Stefanie Lump
Purpose:   Canyon Ambassador Tech Squad-work with teachers to support new sites to use, help do work orders before going to IT
Open To:  Students in Grades 4 through 7
Meeting Information:  Monthly on the last Tuesday from 3:10 - 4:00 p.m.

Writing For Fun

Advisor:  Holly Bejarano
Purpose:  The purpose of Writing for Fun is to get students writing and enable them to write what they enjoy to write. the goal will be for students to publish their writing in some way (Blog, magazine, competitions, etc).
Open To:  Students in Grades 6 through 8
Meeting Information:  Bi-weekly from 7:15 - 8:00 a.m. beginning Thursday, August 23, 2018.


Veterans Heritage

Advisor:  Christopher Raso
Purpose:  The VHP will coordinate fundraising, interviews and publication of student articles regarding the service of community Veterans. The activity is open to seventh and eighth grade learners and will culminate with an annual book signing party in late April 2019.

Outdoor Classroom/Sustainability/Upcycling

Advisor:  Lacey Merritt
Purpose:  We will be helping to maintain and improve the outdoor classroom and make it more sustainable for an eventual tortoise that we want to house on campus. I will also lead students through upcycling activities that they can take home and share.
Open To:  Students in Grades 4 through 8
