Cambridge and Move on When Ready (Grand Canyon Diploma)

The Cambridge Program:

Dysart High School uses the Cambridge University IGCSE Curriculum campus wide for all 9th and 10th grade students in all four core areas—English, math, science and social studies.  This Cambridge Curriculum and Exam system is part of Arizona’s Move on When Ready Initiative and the Grand Canyon Diploma.  The Cambridge program encourages student-centered learning and hands-on application of skills. Clearly defined learner outcomes and content ensure high expectations for all.

Cambridge students are:

• Confident in working with information and ideas – their own and those of others

• Responsible for themselves, responsive to and respectful of others

• Innovative and equipped for new and future challenges

• Engaged intellectually and socially; ready to make a difference.

Students who complete the lower division, 9th-10th grade, Cambridge curriculum are set for success in a Dual Enrollment, Advanced Placement (AP) or Career and Technical Education (CTE) pathways for college and career advancements. By passing the Cambridge Board Examinations students are eligible for the Grand Canyon Diploma, a diploma that allows them early entry into college courses. The Cambridge Curriculum is aligned to the Arizona College & Career Readiness Standards. Dysart is excited to offer this opportunity to all students as we strive to ensure that all students are college and career ready.  We will offer additional information about the Grand Canyon Diploma during our Parent University sessions.

The Grand Canyon High School Diploma

The Grand Canyon High School Diploma is a performance-based diploma available to students in schools that are participating in the Arizona Move On When Ready initiative.  Move On When Ready provides a pathway for high school students to receive a high school diploma when they prove college and career competency on academic exams, rather than just “seat time” and high school credits. In order to qualify for the Grand Canyon High School Diploma, students must meet college and career qualification scores adopted by the Arizona State Board of Education in all core content areas on a series of curriculum-based exams. The qualification scores were set based on extensive research on the level of readiness required to be successful in initial credit-bearing courses at open-enrollment colleges, with special attention to ensuring that students have the mathematical and English literacy needed to be successful in all courses.

The Grand Canyon High School Diploma is provided for in Arizona law, which guarantees that, “Pupils who earn a Grand Canyon Diploma are entitled to all the rights and privileges of a person who graduates with a high school diploma” and that they will have “access to postsecondary scholarships and other forms of student financial aid and access to all forms of postsecondary education” (See Arizona Revised Statues Title 15, Chapter 7, Article 6.).

Cambridge International Examinations Aligned Instructional System & Scoring Scale

Cambridge International Examinations is an internationally benchmarked aligned instructional system composed of academic core and elective courses and curriculum-based exams.

Cambridge International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE)

Cambridge IGCSE courses are typically offered to students in the initial years of high school and provide a strong college and career readiness foundation. The Cambridge IGCSE exam grade scale differs from familiar A-F grades in the United States.  Cambridge uses the following grade scale to report student progress towards college and career readiness on IGCSE exams: A*, A, B, C, D, E, F, and G. Cambridge IGCSE exam scores are reported as both an overall grade and a “Percentage Uniform Mark,” or PUM Score. The PUM Score gives more detailed information about the letter grade a student received, and is the IGCSE exam measure used for the college and career readiness qualification score for most Grand Canyon High School Diploma subjects in Arizona.

Cambridge Testing/MOWR Info to Parents:

Each spring and fall, as part of our school’s participation in the Arizona Move On When Ready initiative, students take one or more curriculum-based exams offered by Cambridge International Examinations. These rigorous exams allow students to prove in-depth learning in a variety of ways: by demonstrating their skills in writing, analysis, and problem-solving.

Move On When Ready provides a pathway for students to receive a high school diploma when they prove college and career readiness on academic exams, rather than just accumulating “seat time” and high school credits. Students who don’t demonstrate readiness at first will receive additional targeted support and have the opportunity to re-take the exams.

It is important to remember that Cambridge IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) exam grades do not correspond to our traditional U.S. “ABCDF” grade scale. Cambridge exam scores are reported as both an overall grade and a “Percentage Uniform Mark,” or PUM Score. Cambridge uses the following grade scale to report student performance on IGCSE Exams: A*, A, B, C, D, E, F, G. The PUM Score gives more detailed information about the letter grades a student received and is the measure used for the Move On When Ready college and career readiness qualification scores. Here is how to think about the score reports:

The Arizona State Board of Education adopted college and career readiness qualification scores for Move On When Ready core content areas between 2012-2014. The college and career readiness qualification scores vary by content area. The following chart shows the qualification scores needed for exams taken this past testing season. Not every student takes all of the exams in the first year of high school.

Move On When Ready Qualification Scores

IGCSE English First Language = 70 PUM Score
IGCSE English Literature = 60 PUM Score
IGCSE Mathematics = 60 PUM Score
IGCSE American History = 60 PUM Score
IGCSE World History = 60 PUM Score
IGCSE Biology = 60 PUM Score
IGCSE Chemistry = 60 PUM Score

Once students have met the college and career qualification scores in all core content areas, they will qualify for the performance-based Grand Canyon High School Diploma. This diploma signals that the student is ready to do college-level work without remediation and opens up a variety of education and career pathways both within and beyond high school.

Our school strongly believes in giving your family tools to support your student. The entire Cambridge IGCSE curriculum is available online for students and families to view at any time. There is also a Cambridge website with additional resources for students, including practice tests and past exams that provide students the opportunity to prepare for and succeed on the IGCSE exams.
