Dear Families of Sunset Hills,

My name is Joey Tokhi and I am honored and privileged to be the principal at Sunset Hills Elementary School for the 2019-2020 school year.  I bring with me eighteen years in education, with sixteen of those years here in the Dysart Unified School District as a teacher, instructional coach, and administrator.  I am honored to be the principal at Sunset Hills! We are so fortunate to have Danielle Gill with us as our assistant principal. She brings with her ten years in education, as a teacher, an English Language Learner Coordinator, positive behavior intervention and support coach, and administrator.

We pride ourselves on building strong relationships with students, parents, staff, and community members.  We look forward to partnering with our families as we embark on the journey ahead.

Office and School Hours: The Sunset Hills summer office hours are from 7:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m., through July 25th.  We will resume regular office hours on July 29th.   Our office hours are 7:15 a.m.-3:45 p.m., Monday through Friday.  The office phone number is (623) 523-8700. Our amazing office staff is here to answer your questions, take suggestions and offer assistance.

The first day of school is Tuesday, August 6th.  Our school hours are 8:15 a.m.-3:00 p.m.  Don’t forget that every Monday is Early Dismissal at 1:00 p.m.

Meet the Teacher Night: Friday, August 2
Meet the Teacher Night will be Friday, August 2nd from 5:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. for grades Pre K – 8th Grade. We invite you to come to the school, visit your child’s classroom and meet the teacher. The classrooms will be open from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. so there is no rush as to when you come; it is a meet and greet only.  Please note that teacher/student placements are firm and changes will not be made to class lists, as homerooms have been created to be equitably balanced.

Administration will be out and about during the evening.  We will make a stop in the library to meet and greet our families from 5:45 p.m.-6:05 p.m.  Feel free to stop in!
Lastly, PTO will have Burgers Amore and Kona Ice food trucks in the front on August 2nd from 5:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m., if your family would like to enjoy dinner during Meet the Teacher Night.

Curriculum Night: Tuesday, August 13
Curriculum Night will have two sessions, one from 5:00 p.m.-5:25 p.m. and the other from 5:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m.  The teachers will speak about the curriculum and goals for the school year. On this night you need to be in your child's classroom promptly at 5:00 p.m. or 5:30 p.m., as the teachers will be sharing a presentation on learning outcomes for the school year.

Parent Teacher Organization (PTO):  Please be sure to join SHES PTO this year.  Membership is open to everybody - students, parents, teachers and the community.  They will have information tables set up during Meet the Teacher Night. PTO has an exciting calendar of events planned this year!

Student Supervision:
Gates will open at 8:00 a.m. and students will report directly to the classrooms to begin their day.  To promote student safety, students should not arrive at school before 8:00 a.m. unless they are going to eat breakfast.  Students eating breakfast should not arrive before 7:45 a.m. There is no adult supervision outside before 8:00 a.m. Our district’s Community Education Department offers on-site services via the “Den Club” to accommodate your before or after school care needs.  Please call (623) 876-7918 for more information. Thank you for your cooperation with student arrival times.

Parent Communication:
During the school year you will receive a monthly school newsletter.  In addition, you will receive a weekly email from your child’s teacher informing you of the amazing things your child is learning and important school reminders. Teachers will also be updating their web pages with important information.  Please be sure to give your homeroom teacher your email address at Meet the Teacher Night so we can better communicate with you throughout the school year. Also remember to visit the Sunset Hills website for additional beginning of the school year information. For up to date grades, don’t forget to sign-up for the Dysart Parent Portal which gives you access to see your child’s grades including assignments and assessments given in the classroom. Sign-up at Parent Portal or download the application.

Thank you for your continued support.  We look forward to a successful year!

Sincerely,
Joey Tokhi, Principal
Danielle Gill, Assistant Principal
