Dear Sunset Hills Families,

My name is Josephine Tokhi and I am honored and privileged to be the principal at Sunset Hills Elementary School for the 2021-2022 school year.  I have been in education for over twenty years, with twenty of those years here in the Dysart Unified School District as a teacher, instructional coach, and administrator.  We are so fortunate to welcome Ms. Vongai Moyo as our assistant principal.  Ms. Moyo has been in education for over twenty years as a teacher, mentor teacher, and administrator.  She has been in the Dysart Unified School District for five years.  We pride ourselves on building strong relationships with students, parents, staff, and community members.  We look forward to partnering with our families as we embark on the journey ahead.

Office and School Hours:  Our office hours are 7:15 a.m.-3:45 p.m., Monday through Friday.  The office phone number is (623) 523-8700.  Our amazing office staff is here to answer your questions, take suggestions and offer assistance.

Our school hours are 8:15 a.m.-3:00 p.m., Tuesday through Friday.  School hours on Monday are 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m.  The first day of school is Tuesday, August 3rd.  Next Tuesday is the only day of the school year parents are welcome to walk their students to their child’s classroom door.  Of course, you may also drop your child off in front of the school on Tuesday.  We will have staff on duty throughout the school to help students find their classroom.  All parents will need to exit the building by 8:15 a.m, as instruction will begin promptly at 8:15 a.m.  Beginning on Wednesday, no parents will be allowed into the school to walk their child to class.

Bus Information:
For families that have a child who will be riding the bus, the bus route information can be viewed through the transportation website.

Meet the Teacher Night: Friday, July 30, 2021
Meet the Teacher Night will be Friday, July 30th from 5:00 p.m.-6:30 p.m. for grades Pre K – 8th grade. We invite you to come to the school, visit your child’s classroom and meet the teacher. The classrooms will be open from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., so there is no rush as to when you come; it is a meet and greet only.  Please note that teacher/student placements are firm and changes will not be made to class lists, as balanced homerooms have been created.

Administration will be out and about during the evening.  We will make a stop in the library to meet and greet our families from 5:45 p.m.-6:05 p.m.  Feel free to stop in!  Our PTO will be in the cafeteria.  Please stop by to hear about the events planned for the year, purchase spirit gear, and join the PTO.  Den Club will be set up in the cafeteria to answer any questions about before and after school care.  Nutritional Services will also be set up in the cafeteria.  Dysart Unified School District has partnered with Chess Emporium.  They will also be set up in the cafeteria on Meet the Teacher Night as well with information on Chess Club.

Curriculum Night: Tuesday,Aug 11, 2021
Curriculum Night will have two sessions, one from 5:00 p.m.-5:25 p.m. and the other from 5:30 p.m.-6:00 p.m.  The teachers will speak about the curriculum and goals for the school year.  On this night you need to be in your child's classroom promptly at 5:00 p.m. or 5:30 p.m., as the teachers will be sharing a presentation on learning outcomes for the school year.
Parent Teacher Organization (PTO):  Please be sure to join SHES PTO this year.  Membership is open to everybody - students, parents, teachers and the community.  They will have information tables set up during Meet the Teacher Night in the cafeteria.  PTO has an exciting calendar of events planned this year!

Student Supervision:
Gates will open at 8:00 a.m. and students will report directly to the classrooms to begin their day.  To promote student safety, students should not arrive at school before 8:00 a.m. unless they are going to eat breakfast.  Students eating breakfast should not arrive before 7:45 a.m.  There is no adult supervision outside before 8:00 a.m.  Our district’s Community Education Department offers on-site services via the Den Club to accommodate your before or after school care needs.  Please call (623) 876-7918 for more information.  Thank you for your cooperation with student arrival times.

Parent Communication:
During the school year you will receive a monthly school newsletter.  In addition, you will receive a weekly email from your child’s teacher informing you of the extraordinary experiences your child is engaging in and important school reminders. Teachers will also be updating their web pages with important information.  Please be sure to give your homeroom teacher your email address at Meet the Teacher Night so we can better communicate with you throughout the school year.   Also remember to visit the Sunset Hills website at
https://www.dysart.org/sunsethills for additional beginning of the school year information. For up to date grades, don’t forget to sign-up for the Dysart Parent Portal which gives you access to see your child’s grades including assignments and assessments given in the classroom. Sign-up at https://dysart.org/parentportal/ or download the application at https://www.dysart.org/Sites/default.aspx?pgid=1801.
