The Dysart boys and girls basketball programs will host a skills training camp on April 30th and May 2 from 6:00 P.M. – 8:00 P.M. 

This is a FREE event for 6th-8th graders who want to work on their game.

The Dysart Drama Demons present to you, The Big Bad Musical! This howling courtroom comedy follows the story of fairy-tale characters suing the Big Bad Wolf for all of her misdeeds! We need you, the audience, to be our jury and help us decide if this fiendish wolf is guilty or innocent!  

Our shows are April 11th and 12th at 7:00PM. 

Students, staff, families and community members are welcome to attend this event.

Admission: $7 for adults and $5 for students and children: tickets. 

Get ready for jury duty! 

April 9th and 11th will be ASPIRE, ACT, AZSci State testing. E-learning day for 10th & 12th grades

We are almost ready for testing. On April 9th and 10th, we will have school-wide testing for all 9th and 11th grade students. Testing will take place in the morning and there will be a modified schedule in the afternoon where students will attend their classes for a shortened time. School will end at 2:15pm.  Transportation will be provided like a normal school day for those students who take the bus home.  

All 10th and 12th grade students will participate in E-Learning at home for April 9th and 10th. These students will be working on assignments in Schoology. Each of their teachers will provide an assignment for either day.  

Please join the Dysart Baseball team as they honor our veterans and active duty members at their home game April 5th at 5:00PM. 

This event is to show appreciation to those who have served or currently serving in the greatest military in the world. 

Those who have served or are currently in the military are asked to arrive at 4:30PM. All honorees will lineup on the field before the playing of the national anthem to be recognized as our heroes. 

This weakened wrapped up the SkillsUSA Arizona State Leadership and Skills Conference in Phoenix, Arizona. 

DHS was designated as a Gold Chapter of Distinction, ranking Dysart as one of the highest-scoring schools in the SkillsUSA Chapter Excellence Program. 

Dysart ranked near the top overall and that received a near perfect score. 

The highest-scoring schools are sent to SkillsUSA's national office to be reviewed for Models of Excellence. 

Dysart Football will host a skills camp April 8th - May 1st from 5:30 P.M. - 7:30 P.M. 

This camp is open to all 4th - 8th graders for a one-time fee of $25.

The City of Surprise is offering a paid summer internship program for income-eligible Surprise teens between the ages of 15-19. Applications are being accepted now through March 31.

Congratulations to Boys Basketball who made it to Open State Tournament! The Demons fought hard against ALA- Gilbert North, but fell short. Dysart will now host the first round of  the 4A State Tournament 02/21 @ 7pm against ALA- Queen Creek. (No cash at the door, GoFan only as this is an AIA event.)

UPDATE: The Demons pulled out a win against ALA- Queen Creek on 02/21 and will now head to Sahuaro HS in Tucson on 02/23 at 7pm for the 2nd round of playoffs.

Dysart Schools has partnered with the city of Surprise to offer a high school level Emergency Medical Services (EMS) at Valley Vista High School. This program will be open to all seniors attending any Dysart School. 

This course will be a senior-level course offered through the district's career and technical college education (CTE) program, possible college credit through Maricopa Community Colleges . Certified graduates would have the opportunity for immediate employment as an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) through a public or private ambulance service. February 14th- During an Elective Class Period, you will have another opportunity to receive FAFSA Assistance. Especially if you haven't received a pass from the counseling office as of yet, You will receive one soon ( if you signed up to attend one of these workshops).  If you are a student that has already had the chance to work on your FAFSA applications in January, please make arrangements to attend one of our FAFSA night events ( parents invited). Fill it out, and return it by February 20th at 2:15pm. Only 14 spots are available, so don't procrastinate- The students chosen must be on track to graduate and seriously considering Ottawa college after graduation.

College 101 Night

The Dysart Unified School District will host a College 101 Night for parents interested in learning about the college acceptance and financial aid process. The event will take place on Thursday, February 1, 2024 from 5pm-7pm at Valley Vista High School, located at 15550 N. Parkview Place in Surprise, Arizona

Ottawa University College Tour

Current Seniors,  Our Counseling team has scheduled a college tour to Ottawa University, February 28, 2024 from 9am- 2pm. Transportation and lunch will be provided for the chosen students who attend. Also,  due to the limited amount of spots, only 14 seniors who are on track to graduate will be chosen, on a first come first serve basis. So, if you are interested, come pick up a permission slip  from Ms. White's desk  labeled "DHS Parent Permission Form" in the counseling office and submit it by Friday February 2, 2024 to be considered.  No permission slips submitted after the deadline date (above) will be taken.

Desert Palms Scholarship Program

This is a scholarship provided through the Desert Palms Presbyterian Church of  Sun City West, and offers scholarships to students who would not ordinarily qualify for many existing scholarships. 

Requirements  of prospect Student Recipients include: 

• Completion of the DPCC Scholarship application 
• A 2.7 high school GPA, with demonstrated potential for higher education 
• A class rank in the upper half  of their class, but lower than the top ten percent 
• Demonstrated financial need
• An achiever with school and outside activities
• A U.S. citizen, or a legal  alien  and resident  of Arizona, including DACA status 
• A desire to attend a community college in Arizona 

Please note that once you submit an application to be considered for this scholarship, all decisions will be in the hands of Desert Palms Church and not Dysart High School. All candidates will be notified of this process by mail.

Hey Seniors, 

• If you haven't taken a senior picture yet, bring an appropriate outfit tomorrow, Friday January 19th during both lunches. It's a very important day for you.  Even though you are participating in spirit week, bring a portrait appropriate outfit to change into to get your picture taken. Again, this is just for seniors who haven't taken a picture for graduation yet. Two pictures will be taken: 1- general 1-cap and gown (loaner will be provided by Gradsphotography)

We are so excited to announce the DHS Achievement Tutoring Program to our Dysart High School Family.  The sole purpose of ATP, is to improve proficiency within future test  and will not be used to complete homework. The ATP program will provide ACT preparation for students who are registered in advance to attend.

EMS PROGRAM AT Willow Canyon High

This 1 year Emergency Medical Services Program prepares 11th grade students to work in various emergency medical and medical-type industries such as paramedic, firefighting, nursing, etc., while preparing students to get certified and enter into the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians and earn the American Heart Association CPR/AED certification. This program is a Senior level block format class which requires travel to complete internship hours. Click this link to learn more about our EMS program and to apply 

Attendance Matters here at Dysart High School. Missing a day of school here and there may not seem like much, but absences add up! 

Did you know that when you miss only 2 days a month, that adds up to 20 days a year , 30 hours of math, 60 hours of reading and writing. Ultimately students with this attendance record, will  miss approximately 1 year of school by their  senior  graduation.

It goes without saying that attending school everyday is extremely crucial to the academic success of a student.

Easton Carleton, a senior from Dysart High School, was named a recipient for the Heisman High School Scholarship.  

The Heisman High School Scholarship honors the nation’s most esteemed high school seniors by recognizing and rewarding outstanding scholar-athletes who understand that the most important victories not only happen on the field, but in their schools and communities. These remarkable young leaders set an example and make a game-changing difference every day, paving the way to greatness for everyone around them.

Easton is a multi-sport athlete who participates in Varsity Basketball, Varsity Baseball, and the Best Buddies program at Dysart High School.  The Best Buddies program operates as a student-run friendship club, which creates buddy pairs between students with and without disabilities. Best Buddies helps to create an inclusive school climate for students and a community culture of acceptance.  Additionally, Easton participates in the AVID program at Dysart High School and attends the Physical Therapy program at West-Mec.  He’s been accepted to many schools around the country but is currently looking to attend Houghton University in New York to pursue an Exercise Science or Physical Therapy degree, and continue his athletic career and play baseball. 

More than 4,878 students have earned the honor of becoming School Winners in the Heisman High School Scholarship competition awarded by The Heisman Trophy Trust. One hundred of these School Winners will become State Winners with the opportunity to become part of 12 National Finalists and ultimately be named National Winners and earn lucrative scholarships.

Wednesday, November 30th will be the last day for Seniors to submit graduation orders. So, if you haven't ordered your cap and gown, or any additional graduation items this is the time to do so. Our Josten Rep will be on campus to assist students during both lunches. 

Parents, please feel free to contact our front office  with any graduation questions or concerns regarding this event, although during this time parents or guardians will not have access to the campus. Thank you for your cooperation.

We are so proud to announce that Dysart High School earned an “A” rating from the school accountability labels for the 2022-2023 school year! Dysart is one of 18 schools in the district to receive the “A” rating.

Dysart High School's Student Council will be hosting a Homecoming Tailgate Event on October 6th, from 4pm-6pm on the DHS practice field, on the south side of the school.  The Tailgate Event will showcase Dysart clubs with booths for games and food trucks! Admission is free. The Homecoming Tailgate Event is open to students, families and the community.

HOMECOMING GAME: 7pm DHS Football Stadium

The gate opens at 6:00 pm and admission prices are: $5 for adults and $4 per ticket for students with their ID's/Military with ID's/Senior Citizens. GoFan is available for pre-sale and online tickets and cash payment at the gate will be accepted as well. 

The Homecoming game is open to students, families and the community. 

A reminder that there is no re-entry.

Picture Retakes 

Grads photography will be here during both lunches to retake photos and also to capture students who have not yet had their photos taken.  Please set aside time during your lunch to come over to the auditorium to have your picture taken. More questions, See Ms. Eckhardt in the front office. 

Senior Graduation Presentation 

Attention Class of 2024, Jostens will be on campus giving a presentation and answering questions about Cap and Gowns and other Senior Class Merchandise during 3rd hour in the auditorium.  * Senior Timelines will also be handed out at this time.

Dysart Schools to Host “Vaping 101” Event for Parents Hello Dysart Parents and Guardians, Dysart Schools invites you to join us for a Vaping 101 presentation on Wednesday, September 27 from 6:00-7:30pm at The Vista Center for the Arts (15660 N. Parkview Place, Surprise, AZ 85374).  

Vaping is one of the largest behavioral issues we see in our schools today, especially among middle and high school students. This event will explore current facts and myths around vaping, and you’ll leave with effective solutions in protecting your student(s).  

Anyone in the community is welcome to attend, and the presentation is appropriate for all ages, so parents can bring their school-aged children along to hear about vaping directly if they choose.

Trystan Wright, a 17-year-old senior at Dysart High School in El Mirage, Ariz., is an outstanding student with a laundry list of extracurriculars. He loves to volunteer, played basketball at Dysart until suffering an injury then joined DECA, a club preparing emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers. He traveled across the country with DECA, ranking top three in a national competition, and is now the 2023-2024 President. 

Despite these accomplishments, Wright struggled to land his first job. “I’ve applied to six jobs and had three interviews but didn’t get any so that’s a little bit frustrating,” he laments. Until, his Dysart HS Business and Marketing teacher, Leslie Palombo, recommended a virtual internship offered through Center for the Future of Arizona’s (CFA) Arizona Pathways to Prosperity (APTP) in partnership with Work Based Learning Alliance (WBLA). The virtual paid internship connects high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors with Arizona-based companies. The students work in teams guided by mentors and WBLA’s Practera to complete projects solving real-life problems.  

The Spring 2023 cohort included 27 students, including Wright, and six employers from healthcare, economic development, energy, and more. Wright interned at Tucson Electric Power (TEP) under Joanne Kingman, Training Supervisor for Transmission and Distribution Operations. He describes the opportunity as “an easy yes.” Throughout the six-week internship, Wright and his fellow team members developed an updated retention and training program for TEP. They utilized artificial intelligence to formulate life-like scenarios and simulators, a highlight for Wright, to digitize on the job tasks. 

Wright’s team stretched across the state with some students in Tucson and Tempe. Teamwork is an advantage of the virtual setting and Wright’s favorite lesson. He says, “Not just in college but in the real world or any kind of job, it’s important to know how to work with different people.” Virtual also eliminates other barriers to entry. For example, an employer might not be able to house five interns in-person and students in rural areas might not be able to travel.  

Beyond these benefits, for young people, the internships foster necessary skill attainment including independence, confidence, problem-solving, critical thinking, time management, and more. For employers, the program gives companies a voice in workforce development, eliminates paperwork, expands bandwidth, and creates a low-risk environment for trial and error.  

According to the Arizona Progress Meters, 48% of Arizona residents ages 25-64 have completed a two or four year degree or have an active professional certificate or license. Yet, as of 2020, nearly 65% of all jobs in Arizona require more education after high school. Programs like APTP’s virtual internships move the needle towards Arizona’s 60% attainment goal aimed at building a stronger workforce. And, Arizonans support these efforts. According to a 2020 Gallup Arizona Survey, 84% of Arizonans agree a highly educated and skilled population is good for Arizona’s economy. “Young people need to have an awareness of an education plan leading to careers in high-demand sectors with livable wages. Those jobs are usually aligned with high-demand sectors in regions that spur economic development in those regions and across the state,” says Aaron Ball, CFA College & Career Pathways Director. 

As for Wright, he feels relieved to complete the internship with high remarks from TEP, “It was definitely an eyeopener since I had never worked before.” And, he also feels armed with necessary skills to continue on his career pathway by graduating high school and pursuing a business major in hospitability and tourism potentially at the University of Arizona in Tucson.  

Arizona Pathways to Prosperity plans to host additional cohorts and hopes to reach more students and employers, 105 students and 15 employers have participated to date, by collaborating with regional partners to take ownership and dedicate funding to support a defined number of students yearly.

Overall, APTP enables more young people to earn degrees and credentials for high-demand jobs, making it easier for them to enter the workforce and propel innovation and economic growth in the state. The initiative has impacted over 50,000 students in early college pathways at more than 40 middle and high school partners across Arizona. Senior portraits are different from the picture that you will take on picture day. These portraits will be taken in a cap and gown, and used during senior awards and your 2024 graduation ceremony. ( a loaner cap and gown will be provided during your photoshoot  with grads)

Dysart High School will host a dedication ceremony for their new turf field prior to the first varsity football game of the 2023-2024 season on August 18. The ceremony will include local dignitaries, district and school leaders speaking on the field and a ceremonial ribbon cutting. The field showcases beautiful new turf, which boldly displays school spirit, and will provide students with a great surface to play, run, march and participate in activities on. The turf field comes as Dysart High School celebrates its 60th Anniversary, after officially opening for the 1963-1964 school year.  The Demons are hosting San Tan Valley High School for the football season opener.  The dedication ceremony will begin at 6:40pm with the game following at 7:00pm. Dysart High School is located at 11425 N Dysart Rd, El Mirage, AZ 85335.

Tickets are required and can be purchased in advance on GoFan. Cash is always welcome at the gate as well.

Prepared to learn:  

Being prepared to learn means students will need to bring necessary materials with them to class, so the students can be active participants.  They will need to take the most direct route to class, to arrive on time. Students will us the restrooms at the appropriate times. Eating a healthy breakfast in the moring and getting enough sleep is important so that students are ready to learn.

Dysart Athletics is offering summer conditioning for DHS students from May 30th - July 27th. 

Athletes must be cleared through the athletic office, including a 203-24 sports physical before attending workouts.

Student Council will host the Hoopcoming Dance on January 28th in the old gym from 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. Tickets are available to be purchased at the basketball games on Jan. 27th, but will not be sold at the door.

Trystan Wright from Dysart High School received 3rd place overall in his section for Marketing Communications in the Western Region.

Each of DECA’s conferences connects with corporate professionals to engage students in learning industry-related trends and content.

Students entering high school in the 2023-2024 academic year, and their parents, are invited to attend an incoming freshman meeting on Monday, December 5 to learn about high school expectations, unique programs, and the process for registration and class selection. These meetings are designed to provide incoming freshmen with an overview of the academic programs available at Dysart Unified School District’s four high schools and explain the process of registering for ninth-grade classes.

 Dysart Unified School District invites parents and students to a Career and College Expo on Wednesday, October 26 from 5:30 - 7:30pm at the Dysart District Office, located at 15802 N. Parkview Place in Surprise.  

The expo showcases Dysart's Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs, West-MEC, colleges and universities, and military representatives so families can explore opportunities to pursue in and after high school. This is a great way for 5th through 11th grade students and their parents to get hands-on with all of the career pathway classes and programs offered at Dysart Schools. The DHS Counseling department will host a FAFSA Night on November 9th, from 5:30 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., in Room 4017. This event is for seniors and their parents. Counselors, Be a Leader Foundation and Gear Up will be available to assist in the process. 

Saturday, September 10, the Dysart Demons JROTC Raider team competed at Red Mountain HS for the 2022 Fitness Challenge. Ten teams competed in a grueling 20 event course that tested their mental and physical toughness. There was one start time, and the clock continued to run until they crossed the finish line. Events included litter carry, tires, 1-rope bridge, low crawl, crab walk, flutter kicks, push-ups, sit-ups, tire drag, tire flips, telephone pole run, 5 gallon water can carry, ammo can 30-50lbs carry, and  many more. The Demons were prepared and ready for the challenge, led by their team captain Janessa Tovar. 

After the dust settled Dysart had a time of 32:02, and secured a 1st place victory. 

Dysart High School Football battled and fell to Fountain Hills on Friday night at home, 22-14.  It was their second game of the season in 3A action as Dysart moves to 1-1 on the season.  The Demons jumped out to quick 7-0 lead in the first quarter after a touchdown from Kye Brown to Senior Dillon Grant.  Quarterback Kye Brown followed it up in the second quarter with a touchdown pass to Senior, Taesean Allen to increase the lead to 14-0.  

Fountain Hills responded with two touchdowns near the end of the second quarter to tie the game going into halftime.  

After a scoreless third quarter, Fountain Hills took the lead with a touchdown and two-point conversion with 8 minutes left in the game.  That ended up being the last score of the game as the Demons came up short trying to tie it up.

The Demons are home again this week again Cortez at 7pm on Friday September 2, 2022.

Dysart Schools have many opportunities for the community to assist schools in providing an amazing educational experience to each and every student. Volunteers help to enrich children’s learning opportunities, provide individual attention to children who need one-on-one assistance, promote a school-home-community partnership for quality education, provide staff members with more time to work with students, and assist staff members and support personnel with non-instructional tasks.

Where is Help Needed?

How to Become a Volunteer:

Who Should Apply to Volunteer?

Anyone who cares about children and education is a potential volunteer. Parents, grandparents and community members 18 years of age or older who want to make a difference in the lives of children and support educators are encouraged to apply to become a volunteer with Dysart Unified School District. Volunteers are welcome in all of our schools and prior teaching experience is not necessary.

Apply for Free and Reduced Meals

Beginning July 1, 2022 the USDA is returning to income eligibility guidelines for free or reduced meals. All families should complete a Free and Reduced Lunch Application at SchoolCafe.com to help maintain school funding and make sure that qualified families receive this and other benefits. Only one application is required per family, and may be completed at SchoolCafe.com.

How to Add Meal Funds to an Account

Cash and checks are accepted for meal purchases, or families may utilize SchoolCafe.com to prepay for meals online, view their balances, or place restrictions on purchases. Online payments take 24 hours to post to student accounts.

A la carte and snack items are available for purchase on each campus, and additional meals are available for an added charge. Parents are always welcome to dine with their child, but please be sure to call in advance and check-in at the school office. Adult meals may be purchased for $1.75 for breakfast or $3.50 for lunch.

Update Your Communication Preferences and Contact Info

To make sure that we can keep you informed in emergency situations, please ensure that your contact information is current in the Parent Portal. You are also able to adjust your communication preferences (phone, text, and/or email) at Dysart.org/ParentPortal or on the Campus Parent app to ensure you are getting the various message types in the way that you would like. Remember that if you select more than one type of communication per category, you will receive the message multiple times via each of those avenues.

It was a busy season for Career and Technical Education (CTE)  students throughout the district who competed at state and international level in the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA), and SkillsUSA state conferences, and the Distributive Education Clubs of America (DECA) International Career Development Conference.

The FCCLA State Leadership Conference was held on March 28-30, 2022 in Tucson, Arizona.  The competition allows students to compete in over 30 different events, meet the current State Executive Council and State Officer Candidates, qualify for the National Leadership Conference in San Diego, and network with members across Arizona.  

Valley Vista High School students received the following recognitions: Olivia Black earned a gold medal and a perfect score in Chicken Fabrication, Megan Gatz and Sierra Painter both won silver in Culinary Arts, and Joselyn Villegas won bronze in Food Innovations.

FCCLA offers members the opportunity to expand their leadership potential and develop skills for life - planning, goal setting, problem solving, decision making, and interpersonal communication - all necessary within the home and workplace. FCCLA is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members.

The FBLA State Leadership conference was held on April 4-6 in Tucson, Arizona. The event gives students the opportunity to advance to the national conference, compete in a variety of competitions, participate in workshops, and run for state office for FBLA. 

Dysart High School students Jared Wilson, Ryan Maisano, Bryan Naiuli, Damien Cordero, and Devonte Reed placed in the top five for Parliamentary Procedures. Valley High School students Lilly Smith and Raven Cardosi placed second in 3D Animation.

FBLA inspires and prepares students to become community-minded business leaders in a global society through relevant career preparation and leadership experiences.

Students from all four district high schools competed in the SkillsUSA State Competition hosted April 19-20, 2022 in Phoenix.  This event is the premier showcase for Arizona’s trade, technology and service high school and college students. This annual championship features over 75 skills and leadership competitions that determine who will represent Arizona at the national SkillsUSA Championships.  

Gage Fuentes from Dysart High School earned the Silver medal in Auto Tech Basic.  Several students from Shadow Ridge High School earned medals including Jordyn Jones who earned a gold medal in T-Shirt Design and a Silver medal in Advertising Design.  Alysa Horton received a gold medal for Stage Coach Interview Skills.  Zachary Hampton and  Joseph Holm earned second Place Web Development & Design.  Jacob Bacome and Brian Bucsi won gold in 3D Visualization, and Tyler Winter and Tyler Cain won a bronze medal in Additive Manufacturing.  Willow Canyon High School students Allison Kotzbauer, Eli Hernandez, and Morgan West won gold in Career Pathways Showcase: Arts and Communication and the club was named a gold Chapter of Excellence.

SkillsUSA is a Career and Technical Education partnership of students, teachers and industry working together to ensure America has a skilled workforce. SkillsUSA provides quality education experiences for students in leadership, teamwork, citizenship and character development by building and reinforcing self-confidence, work attitudes and communications skills. A nonprofit national education association, SkillsUSA serves middle-school, high-school and college/postsecondary students preparing for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service (including health) occupations.

Students from Dysart High School, Shadow Ridge High School, and Willow Canyon High School competed in the DECA International Career Development Conference (ICDC) on April 23-26 in Atlanta, Georgia.  The event allows students to compete with more than 10,000 DECA students from across the country.  Students participated in the Emerging Leaders Series in order to attain 21st Century Skills in the areas of collaboration, communication, critical thinking and creativity.  Students also network with hundreds of representatives in the college and career exhibits as they plan for their future.

Shadow Ridge High School student Jamie Springer was a top ten finalist in Project Management Community Awareness event, and Noah Axelson, Lily McDaniel, Kloey Garcia earned 6th place in the Virtual Business Restaurant. 

Irene Silva, Bethanie Lopez-Draeger and Servando Lopez from Dysart High School won a gold medal in the Small Business Enterprise Food Operations Competition.  Dysart High students Lorenzo Roman and Dawn Jones took fourth place in the Business Law and Ethics Competition. 

DECA is a premier student organization that supports the development of marketing and management skills in career areas such as hospitality, finance, sales and service, business administration, and entrepreneurship.  DECA is one of the many Career and Technical Education (CTE) opportunities offered to prepare students for the academic and vocational skills necessary to successfully enter the workforce. Health Occupation Students of America (HOSA) students from Dysart High School, Willow Canyon High School, and Shadow Ridge High School competed in the HOSA State Leadership Conference held in Tucson March 30 - April 1. 

HOSA is a student-led organization that seeks to empower students to become leaders in the global health community, through education, collaboration, and experience. The HOSA State Leadership conference provides students the opportunity to use the skills they have learned in their Career and Technical Education (CTE) courses and apply them to a competitive events program. 

Students had the opportunity to compete in multiple different events, participate in workshops, and network with current healthcare professionals as well as other students from across the state. 

Congratulations to the following students for their achievements in their respective events. 

Willow Canyon student Alyssa Morris placed second in Medical Terminology, Tyrah Davis placed fifth in Prepared Speaking, Kenna Moore placed fifth in Medical Law & Ethics, Hailey Amos placed fourth in Nursing Assisting, Kristin Anderson placed third in Human Growth & Development, and Melody Holland, Kenna Moore, Lauren Buseman, Elizabeth Wood and McKenna Moreno placed top eight in the Anatomage Competition. In addition, Kennedy Wilson and Isabella Buoscio qualified for the International Leadership Conference for their performance in the Healthcare Issues event. 

Dysart High School student Lindy Pottle placed first in Medical Reading, Maeve Shapera, Charity Sumner, Amaya Menjivar, Denice Calderon, Alyssa Blandford, and Alicia Parra placed first in MRC Partnership, Eden Mussleman, Sarah Weller, Victoria Mather, and Dora Mazariego placed third in Medical Innovations, Shayne Vasquez and Makenzie Maloof placed fourth in Medical Innovations, Abbigail Kizer and Ruben Jimenez placed fifth in Health Education, and Lane Vazquez Luna placed fifth in Epidemiology. Additionally, Marisol Trejo, Alejandro Arevalo and Briana Torres received the Barbara James Service Award, and Lane Vazquez Luna and Lindy Pottle were the recipients of HOSA scholarships in the amounts of $500 and $2,000. Overall, Dysart High School had 17 students qualify to compete in the International Conference.

The HOSA International Leadership Conference will take place on June 22-25, 2022 in Nashville, Tennessee. 

HOSA is a student-led Career and Technical Student Organization (CTSO) specifically for students enrolled in CTE programs. The mission of HOSA is to promote career opportunities in the healthcare industry. HOSA provides a unique program of leadership development, motivation and recognition exclusively for secondary, postsecondary and collegiate students interested in a career in health care. 

Congratulations to Robert Blanco, Jennifer Olague Carranza and Jesus Izaguirre from the Dysart High School Class of 2021 who were named members of the Million Dollar Club for earning scholarships through the support of the Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program.  

Each year, the AVID cohorts are challenged to earn a certain amount of scholarship and grant money.  In order to do this, they must apply to different colleges and universities as well as complete their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Their original goal was to earn 4.5 million dollars in scholarships and so far, the cohort led by Mr. Keegan Cook, has earned 6.2 million in scholarships. 

The AVID students have made Demon history this year by earning this high honor and each have decided on a major. Robert is planning to become a Physical Therapist (M.D), Jesus strives to become a Civil Engineer, and Jenny plans to become a Biomedical Engineer. Last year, Ren Dickson from the class of 2020, was the first AVID student at Dysart High School to earn over a million dollars in scholarship offers. 

The Dysart High School Advancement Via Individual Determination (AVID) program has been a fixture at DHS since 2008 when it was first introduced to the district. AVID is a program that supports students in the academic middle who are motivated to attend post secondary education, but may not have all of the tools they need in order to be as successful as they can be in a college setting. A typical AVID student is one who has some motivation to be successful, is in the academic middle (2.5-3.5 GPA), possibly the first generation in the family to attend college, or has some other potential barrier to reaching post secondary education. Through the four year program, students are taught note taking skills, time management, test taking skills, collaboration and critical reading skills, and are supported as they tackle rigorous curriculum. 

“We are so proud of our AVID students and can’t wait to see what path they choose to pursue next year,” said Alesha Wisbey, Dysart High School AVID Teacher and Site Coordinator.  

Many teenagers would balk at a 4:00 a.m. wake up time, but Isabel Quintero Soria, cross country athlete at Dysart High School, laced up early to beat the heat each day and was committed to staying in shape and focused on the sport during the closures. 

 “It was difficult because of everything going on, but I made it my goal to run early everyday as the sun rose to make sure I did not lose focus,” said Quintero-Soria.

Isabel has been a member of the varsity cross country team since her freshman year.  She started her journey with the team when Ivory Carson, Math teacher and cross country coach,  encouraged her to try out.

“Coach told me about the team, and I tried out and was surprised at how fast I was and how much I enjoyed it,” said Quintero-Soria.

Coach Carson recognized her natural talent right away. 

“At the Sectional Meet in 2017, Isabel told me the time she would run before the race, which was well beyond her personal best. She ran faster than the time she quoted,” stated Carson. “That day verified something I felt. Isabel is that quiet leader who does what she says and says what she does.”

Isabel has grown as an athlete and member of the team. She was chosen as senior captain this year to lead her close-knit team. 

“My team is a family to me,” she said.  “I have a different mindset when I am with them.  We motivate one another and we just really just love to run together.”

Isabel not only looks to her team for strength but also her coach. 

“Coach Carson is a father figure, he keeps us on track not only in sports but also in class he helps everyone out,'' she said.  “He’s definitely the one to go if you need motivation or just someone to talk about life.”

Speaking of family, Isabel is the youngest of nine children and has a ton of support from her large household and her own personal cheering section at competitions. 

“It’s crazy. I have five brothers and three sisters.  It is awesome to hear them encouraging me from the sidelines during meets.”

Isabel competed in the AIA Division II State Cross Country Meet for the past three years and  established herself as the number seven cross country runner all-time at Dysart High School.  Her desire for her senior season is to move up the all-time list breaking the school record of 19:53.2 held by Gabriel Gomez. With a successful senior season, she will be inducted into the prestigious 100 mile club, an honor bestowed upon four year letter winners in cross country at Dysart High School.

“She inspires others to excellence,” said Carson.

In addition to cross country, Isabel ran track for the first time last season but it was cut short because of COVID-19. Even in the brief season she established herself as the two-mile specialist on the team placing sixth at the Richard Thompson South Mountain Invitational and earning fourth place running the lead-off leg in the 4x800 relay.

Isabel is working arduously to attain a cross country scholarship at an in-state college to major in Criminal Justice with the hope of becoming a lawyer or a detective. 

Dysart High School student, Andrea Soliz, was recently named to the SkillsUSA National Officer Team as the Region 5 Vice President. Previously, Andrea served as the SkillsUSA Region 5 President for the State of Arizona. As a National Officer, Andrea is provided the opportunity to represent SkillsUSA and its members. National Officers serve as communicators, advocates and facilitators in a variety of leadership roles, helping instill skills and career-readiness to fellow members.

The newly elected officers were announced at a virtual recognition ceremony on June 26, 2020.  Before being selected, candidates went through a rigorous application process including written exams, essays, interviews, and a speech. Andrea is one of ten high school students from across the country selected to serve on the 2020-21 SkillsUSA National Officer Team. Being a national officer is one of the highest honors a student can achieve within the SkillsUSA organization.

Andrea is entering her senior year at Dysart High School, and is a dedicated leader on campus. She has worked tirelessly to be an advocate, role model, and mentor to fellow classmates, as well as the community. Through SkillsUSA, she has been provided with many opportunities and experiences that continue to prepare her for her future.
