Programs & Courses

Business and Marketing - CA004
This course explores careers in advertising, entrepreneurship, banking, sales, small and large business, and computers. This is a great course for students thinking about starting a business. This course also explores economic and technological trends in the marketplace such as e-business and economic cycles.

BUSINESS

Computer Applications - BU002
This course is an exploration of computer operations. This course introduces the student to word processing and data presentation. Projects will include simulations of real life business uses. The Internet and other computer and business resources will be studied. It is highly recommended that students have completed a keyboarding program. Students will use E-Books in this course along with other business related materials.

Advanced Computer Applications - BU012
Students will learn to use popular business and industry software. This class will be project based and students will work on small business administration simulations in applications such as word processing and presentation. This course will help students develop advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office applications along with other business related topics. Student will use E-Books in this course along with other business related materials.

Small Business Management (BMAS) - BU029
A small business management course where experiential learning is key. It will focus on problem-based learning through working with real problems faced by entrepreneurs and small business owners. Real-world scenarios and exercises will be used where students often play the roles of financial analyst, marketer, and business owner in order to find solutions. This class provides a solid foundation in terms of the types of business students are most likely to start. In-depth coverage and development of the business plan will be a key component of the course. Completion of Advanced Computer Applications is also recommended.

WEB DESIGN

Introduction to Web Design - BU011
This Internet and Webpage Design course includes instructional units, which involve the understanding of the history of the Internet, its uses, how to efficiently and effectively search and retrieve accurate and useful information, and how to use the information in everyday life at school, home, or work.

This class will help students develop the knowledge and skills required to design web pages using Microsoft Frontpage. Student projects will include using HTML programming code, navigation schemes, project planning strategies, Web components and frames to design Web pages and create graphic layouts that appeal to a variety of audiences.

Web Design 1 - BU018
This course is designed to go beyond the skills developed in Introduction to Web Design and teach students to understand and implement databases, HTML, VBScript and JavaScript when creating web pages. The students will be able to read, write, and edit HTML, VBScript and JavaScript code. The students will learn how to create, edit, maintain and upload their web sites onto a web server.

This course is for all students who have taken the Introduction to Web Design course and desire to learn advanced features of creating web pages on the World Wide Web for themselves, their school, and others in their community. Students will utilize advanced web design programs, such as Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Flash. Students in this course have two main objectives. First, to design and produce a personal website portfolio that features their classwork and their achievements and interests both in and out of school. Portfolios will include student-oriented artifacts in written and multimedia form that will be posted on the school’s web server and can be revised for submission to college and/or potential employers. Second, students will collaborate with classmates to design and create web sites for clubs, organizations and departments within school. These web sites will be hosted on the school’s server.

Web Design 2 - BU019
This is a project-based class where students will create dynamic database web-based applications using the software found in Macromedia Studio 8 including Dreamweaver, Fireworks and Flash. The database driven Websites will use various popular server-side technologies specifically including Coldfusion. This class will instruct students in the extraction and display of data, creation of master-detail pages, and the insertion and updating of database records. Students will also learn to build search interfaces, secure application pages, Javascript programming, advanced database connectivity, serverside page generation, XML programming, Flash remoting and the use of the structured query language (SQL).

INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY

A+ Certification/Computer Maintenance - BU026
This course may be taken for dual credit at Estrella Mountain Community College. The student will learn how a computer works, the history of the computer, its improvements, how the computer components work together, how to set up a computer and install software, and how to install new components. The student will learn everything needed to construct a working computer. The student will learn to troubleshoot and repair/replace hardware and solve software problems. All major computer companies require computer technicians to have an A+ certification. Upon satisfactory completion, the student will be prepared to pass the A+ certification exam.

FINANCE

Personal Money Management - BU040
Students who would like to be prepared to make it on their own without having to worry about financial problems should take this class to learn how to make wise financial decisions. Financial topics to be covered in this class include buying a car, renting an apartment, buying a home, budgeting household income, types of insurance, and investing money.

Financial Planning - BU043
This course is designed to provide knowledge in and the ability to develop a financial plan. It’s not a matter of what your income is, but what you do with your money that’s important. Knowing how to manage money, where to invest it, and how to diversify is a critical aspect in developing an effective portfolio. This course will enable the student to learn how to do this for themselves as well as guide others.

Stock Market and Investments - BU049
This course is designed to provide knowledge in and the ability to deal with the stock market. It’s not a matter of what your income is, but what you do with your money that’s important. Accounting 1 - BU050
A comprehensive introduction to basic financial accounting where recording, summarizing and reporting serve as the foundation of the course. Discover principles of income measurement and asset valuation; accounting systems and controls. A must for students interested in pursuing a field in the financial services industry or who are interested in owning their own business. College credit may be offered through dual enrollment through the Maricopa County Community College District.

Accounting 2 - BU051
A continuation of the founding principals learned in Accounting 1, this course expands on accounting for ownership of equities of partnership and corporations. In addition, topics covered will include debt securities and the fundamentals of cost accounting for planning and control of operations. This course is computer based and simulates real-world operations of accounting for a business. College credit may be offered through dual enrollment through the Maricopa County Community College District.

MARKETING

Marketing - BU041
This course is for students who are interested in owning their own business, advertising, or another business area. The class will focus on the effects of marketing on consumers, business, and society. The students will do projects such as developing a marketing plan, exploring types of advertisements, developing techniques for personal selling, and building organizational skills. Class members will be able to join DECA, Distributive Education Clubs of America.

Entertainment Marketing - BU042
This course prepares students to perform marketing and management functions and tasks that can be applied to amateur or professional sports or sporting events, and entertainment or entertainment services.

Advanced Marketing and Merchandising - BU045
This course gives students the opportunity to expand their knowledge of marketing, and includes an introduction to management functions within an organization with emphasis on merchandising, sales promotion, marketing research, and the process of organizing a marketing business. While enrolled in the course, the student is an active member of DECA, an association of Marketing students.

Retail Operations - BU046
This class is designed to provide students with vocational training in the sales marketing area. Major units of instruction include communications, display, human relations, mathematics, merchandising operations, product and service technology. Instruction in current marketing techniques is utilized with hands-on experience in the school store. Through individualized projects, students are given the opportunity to develop skills in decision-making, visual merchandising, advertising, product and service technology, economics, selling, and computer literacy in marketing.
