Programs & Courses

Health and Environmental Sciences - CA005
This course explores careers in medicine, botany, zoology, and ecology. Students will be using a hands-on approach to explore these areas of science. This course focuses on introducing ideas and lab techniques used in the career field.

ALLIED HEALTH

Medical Foundations - TI110
This is an introductory course for those interested in pursuing medical and biotechnical careers, or who plan on enrolling in an allied health career program. Lab procedures, hands-on technological and biotechnical work, and other medical lab duties will be performed in addition to the study of body systems and other health related topics. This course prepares students for certification as a lab assistant and other allied health and medically related fields.

Sports Medicine 1 - TI100
Sports Medicine 1 is an introductory level course designed for students interested in fields such as athletic training, physical therapy, medicine, physiology of exercise, biomechanics, and other sports medicine related fields. The introductory course includes course work in the following areas: prevention, treatment, and rehabilitation of common sports injuries, health care administration, nutrition, legal concerns, insurance issues, and certification in emergency procedures, including first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation (AED).

Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Therapies (Sports Medicine 2) - TI101
Sports Medicine and Rehabilitation Therapies (Sports Medicine 2) is designed for students interested in athletic training, physical therapy, medicine, exercise physiology, biomechanics, nutrition and other sports medicine relate fields. This course covers prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of advanced sports injuries, taping and wrapping of injuries, and emergency procedures. Students will be re-certified in CPR, First Aid and Automated External Defibrillation through the American Red Cross. Nutrition, sports psychology, rehabilitation with therapeutic modalities, and fitness/conditioning/strength programs will also be covered in this course. Observation hours in various off-campus sports medicine settings will be required, so students must possess a driver’s license, reliable transportation, and proof of insurance.

Lab Assistant 1 - TI102
In this course, students attain expertise in phlebotomy procedures, specimen procurement and sample processing, basic laboratory testing, patient processing, and office procedures/skills. Medical laboratory techniques, and ECGs (electrocardiographs) Instruction includes communication, interpersonal and professional skills, appropriate scientific principles of microbiology, chemistry and hematology and urinalysis integrated into skill development and clinical learning.

Lab Assistant 2 - TI104
This course is a continuation of Laboratory Assistant 1 and the culmination of this Allied Health strand. In addition to building on the skills developed in the prior course, this course offers hands-on experiences in the classroom lab as well as supervised training in a variety of clinical sites. Student must be 18 at the time of graduation to be admitted to this class.

MEDICAL OCCUPATIONS

Medical Occupations - TI111
This course will benefit the student’s application to nursing programs. All students interested in any HEALTH related career would benefit by taking this medical technology class. Students will learn essential information enabling them to function as a skilled nursing assistant in acute, long-term and home-care settings. Classroom lectures will include topics on ethical and legal responsibilities, anatomy and physiology, communication skills, CPR, infection control, universal precautions, measuring and charting vital signs, nutrition, and 177 essential patient care procedures. Each student must complete 75 hours of clinical experiences at a local hospital and nursing home. Upon completion of this class, students will take a state board exam that could certify them as a nursing assistant. Library skills are also emphasized.
