ABOUT JROTC

The Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (JROTC) is a leadership and character development program designed to prepare students for success in school, future careers, and life. Our JROTC program focuses on developing responsible citizens, confident leaders, and service-minded young adults through structured instruction, teamwork, and hands-on leadership experiences.

Participation in JROTC is entirely voluntary and does not require military enlistment. The program emphasizes personal growth, self-discipline, respect, accountability, and service to others. Cadets learn to lead by example, communicate effectively, and collaborate within a supportive and inclusive environment that values individual strengths and mutual respect.

Through engaging classroom instruction and practical leadership laboratories, cadets build essential skills in leadership, citizenship, communication, wellness, and goal setting. Students are provided opportunities to assume leadership roles, plan and execute activities, and reflect on their personal development as both individuals and team members.

JROTC also encourages involvement beyond the classroom through optional extracurricular activities such as community service projects, leadership teams, and competitive events. These experiences reinforce responsibility, perseverance, and teamwork while strengthening school pride and fostering meaningful connections within the community.

Above all, the mission of JROTC is to motivate young people to become better citizens by instilling leadership values, ethical decision-making, and a lifelong commitment to service. These skills benefit cadets regardless of their chosen path after graduation—whether pursuing college, a career, a trade, or military service.

Cadets train rigorously in precision drill, flag etiquette, and ceremonial commands such as “Attention,” “Present Arms,” and “Order Colors,” ensuring flawless performances at graduations, school assemblies, sporting events, and parades. The Color Guard experience blends honor, teamwork, and attention to detail with ceremonial responsibility and competitive excellence, providing cadets with a meaningful, patriotic, and highly disciplined leadership opportunity while proudly representing Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps and Dysart High School.

Fundraising

JROTC programs actively conduct canned food drives as major community service initiatives, demonstrating cadet leadership, teamwork, and civic responsibility. These drives often involve friendly competition between schools or JROTC units and engage the broader district to maximize participation and impact. Each year, cadets collect thousands of non-perishable food items—such as soups, peanut butter, and canned meats—to support families in need, particularly during the holiday season and throughout the year. Donations are proudly delivered to St. Mary’s Food Bank, helping address food insecurity across the local community. To encourage involvement, JROTC programs frequently use incentives and recognition to boost donations and participation. Through these efforts, cadets showcase the mission of the Junior Reserve Officers’ Training Corps by serving others, strengthening community partnerships, and demonstrating a strong commitment to leadership and service.

MARKSMANSHIP

The Dysart JROTC marksmanship is a foundational training program teaching cadets weapon safety, proper maintenance, and firing techniques, primarily using the M4 rifle. It covers assembly, disassembly, and basic marksmanship fundamentals—such as aiming, trigger control, and firing positions (prone, kneeling, standing)—to prepare them for qualification.
